Imagine transforming your backyard into a carnival of laughter, with the kids running round and playing all day. Throwing a backyard party full of DIY outdoor games will be the center of unforgettable memories for your kids, grandkiddos, and their friends. All you need is a bit of crafty inspiration to put your creativity to good use.

Obstacle Course

Get creative and construct a custom obstacle course! Bring your grandkids’ favorite movie or TV show to life, or conjure a world where the kids have to save the medieval castle from the dragon.

Decoupage cardboard boxes for a tunnel the kids must crawl through. Spray paint cones that match the theme. Use a blanket to represent a river the kids must jump over. There are endless possibilities to customize a fun obstacle course.

Giant Tic-Tac-Toe

Turning one of the oldest and most universally known games into a giant outdoor version brings an exciting twist to any backyard party. Giant Tic-Tac-Toe keeps the simplicity and strategy of the traditional game but scales it up for more interactive fun.

Use nine hula-hoops or large fabric squares to construct the grid. Then, find the designated items that’ll act as Xs and Os. It could be anything from painted plastic plates to beach balls with different patterns.

You can also set up the game as a tournament for the kids. Every win will take them further to the championship and a grand prize.

Gaga Ball

Gaga Ball is a fast-paced, high-energy game that’s like a friendlier version of dodgeball. Players confined to a pit must hit a small ball at or below their opponents’ knees to eliminate them from the game.

People don’t adore the sport solely because of the physical and mental benefits of Gaga Ball. It’s especially favorable because it’s easy to set up on your own!

The plastic barriers are simple and safe to arrange on grass, concrete, or plush mats. All you need next is a soft foam ball and some spirited players.

Tarp Toss

Tarp toss is a homemade spin on classic carnival games. Players stand at a designated distance from the tarp and take turns throwing bean bags or balls through the cutouts to score points. Your job is to create the game board.

Begin by cutting shapes (circles, squares, triangles) into your tarp to serve as the targets. Around each cutout, use a permanent marker to assign point values based on the difficulty. Secure the tarp between trees or wooden posts using ropes or bungee cords.

The last thing you’ll need is bean bags for the kids to toss. This game is a bit of a challenge, but it’s also thrilling since the kids get to test their aim and accuracy.

Never let a backyard party for kids be boring ever again! Creating any of these DIY outdoor games for your backyard party will keep the kiddos excited and telling everyone at school how they had the best party EVER!

DIY your own Edward Scissorhands Halloween costumes using only thrift store clothes and not only will you have the best handmade costumes out there, but you’ll save a ton of money in the process too! As soon as they see that iconic black belted suit and wild black hair they’ll think they are seeing the real Edward!

I have this thing with DIY’ing costumes from classic movies that I watched ENDLESSLY as a kid. In 2021 we made DIY Beetlejuice (and Lydia) costumes, and 2022 was even better…..EDWARD SCISSORHANDS!! (Before Beetlejuice in 2019 we made epic Pennywise ones- both the old AND the new clown!)

I’m not gonna lie, my kiddos were not thrilled about any of my ideas when I first proposed them. In fact, I believe their responses were “Who the heck is Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands?!”

But after a few movie nights, not only were they on board, but they were as excited as me.

Now, I always like for the 3 of us to dress up and coordinate together, and in the past I have been forced to get pretty creative with how to do that.

First it was Beetlejuice and Lydia, and this year its Edward and Kim (Winona Ryder). But that’s only TWO characters? And I didn’t want the Twins to dress exactly the same!

*Side note: How funny is it that BOTH movies have Winona as one of the characters that I dress up as?!

My solution was to do TWO different movie versions of each character! So for Edward we made one version with the classic black belted suit that he has on when Peg first found him in the mansion.

The other one was the oversize grey pants, white tailored shirt and suspenders.

Fair warning, there are a LOT of pics in this post! My hopes is that if you want to make these DIY Edward Scissorhands Halloween Costumes that you’ll have as much info here as possible to do it as easily as possible!

Now you may not have the exact items that I used to make these Edward Scissorhands costumes, but hopefully with this inspiration you can find things that are similar and can make do.

How to Shop for DIY Edward Scissorhands Costumes

The best way to find what you need is to save a bunch of Google images to your phone so that you have them as reference photos to take with you thrifting.

Now don’t go saving photos of other peoples DIY Edward Scissorhands costumes, save photos from the actual movie so that your inspiration is coming straight form the source and you can get as close to the real deal as possible. My main inspiration came from the movie photos above (Kim is below).

When you are at the thrift store, keep an open mind! Remember that things can be cut, sewn, dyed, torn, pieced together and altered to make it what you need! I’m not gonna lie, for these DIY Edward Scissorhands costumes, I ABSOLUTELY lucked out on what I found.

Justice was the “original” Edward Scissorhands, with the black belted leather suit so his was pretty easy to shop for, but not so easy to construct. I think I bought out EVERY black belt from EVERY thrift store in a 3 mile radius to make this!

I wanted it to be as close as possible, so I did purchase some buckles and metal studs on Amazon that I could add to the suit to give it more metal, just like Edward has in the movie.

Maddox was even simpler to shop for and super easy to make. Everything was a bit big on him, but thats totally ok because Edwards clothes in the movie are big as well.

For myself, I found the perfect white dress. Who cares that it didn’t quite fit? I only had to wear it for a night!

For the wigs, I had to spring for new ones on Amazon because I just wasn’t able to find anything thrifting. I got 2 “Midnight Feign” Wigs for the Edwards, and then styled them up from there.

I got a “Beth” from Yellowstone wig for myself (Kim). And I am using this one for my Barbie Costume this year as well, so I am getting my moneys worth.

How to make your own DIY Edward Scissorhands Costumes from Thrift Store Materials

Let me show you how I pulled this all together. This post of course will not be a step-by-step tutorial because the items that I used you most likely will not be able to find at your local thrift stores. But use this as inspiration and for ideas of how YOU can make your own DIY Edward Scissorhands and Kim costumes for Halloween!

Original Black Leather Belted Suit

This one is NOT for the faint of heart. Now I know why these go for $150 online! But it was so worth it in the end.

My biggest question was how the heck was he going to get in and out of this suit once the belts were all glued on? I determined that he would need to put it on with his arms through it, and the back open the way that you would put a hospital gown on. It was way too long too, so I just chopped about 8 inches off the bottom (Justice is TINY).

I wanted it to come up to his neck in the front, so I actually turned the shirt around backwards and made the front of the shirt be the back of the suit. I cut the front open and made it so that it could close using velcro. This worked FABULOUSLY!

I started with the biggest most metal belts that I had. I needed one to be the main focus that Edward has right around his midsection, so I chose the thickest one and luckily for me that one came on and off and was stretchy around his waist (the one on the left) so we took that one on and off with the costume and didn’t have to glue it.

Then I just glued all the rest of those bad boys on using E6000 and Hot Glue.

I took the thinnest belts that I had and glued those around the collar, making them open and close in the back with velcro as well, so that he didn’t choke.

I found the pants were easier to do while he was IN the pants, so that I could determine how tight I needed them to be, so that he could get them on and off. Be REALLY careful with the hot glue gun if you do this! There were definitely a few minor burns in the process #whoops.

I used E6000 as well since thats a much more permanent hold, and then held them in place with binder clips until that completely dried in 24 hours.

I glued on the metal rings and studs all over once everything was dried.

Now for the shoulder straps. I wrapped them around the chest belts and glued them in place, and then glued them over the shoulders and connected them to the same belts on his back.

On the back they criss crossed and connected with velcro and not glue, so he could get the shirt on and off (there is a pic of Justice from the back down below). Basically we had to velcro this shirt in place once it was all said and done.

In the movie, Edward has these pleather patches, so I purchased some Faux Leather from Dollar Tree and added one to the neck/chest…

And to the pants….

He even had this weird crotch patch that we strapped onto him as well LOL!

After several days and lots of patience, here is the completed Black Pleather Belted Edwards Scissorhands Suit!

As you can see I added some chains and pleather to the arms along with some more belts. And as much metal as I could possibly glue on here!

PS: He is wearing MY boots that are huge

You have got to see his Sassy stance from the back LOL…

Thats pretty much all the DIYing involved to make this original Black Belted Leather Edward Scissorhands suit. Like I said, a lot of work but totally #WorthIt. Now for the Grey pants and white shirt with suspenders!

Grey Pants and White Shirt With Suspenders Edwards Scissorhands

Maddox’s DIY Edward Scissorhands costume was far easier to make than Justice’s.

I had him get dressed in what I bought, and determined all I had to do was make the black leather suit show from under his white shirt, and cut his suspenders and add some safety pins to keep them together (remember Edward accidentally cut them getting dressed).

I used E6000 glue to secure the belts around the collar of this black sweater, and used binder clips to hold them in place until it dried. The belts are cut in the back, and I added velcro to open and close so that he could easily get in and out of the shirt and so that it didn’t choke him of course.

Here I just cut the suspenders and then put them back together using safety pins.

Thats about all we had to do to accomplish the Grey Pants and White Shirt with Suspenders look!

DIY Edwards Scissorhands Gloves

I definitely combined a few elements here to make these and I’m not gonna lie, this was THE most time consuming and painful part of the whole process. So much so that I almost made only one glove for each twin! In the end, I don’t know how to half-a** anything so I ended up doing both but it took HOURS and I say HOURS.

I’ll do my best to show and explain, but I would recommend buying costume prop hands if you can afford it! This is something I really should have recorded so you could SEE how to do, because I just don’t think these steps will be enough to actually make these, but I’ll try!

I found a template on YouTube that I paid $1 for (thank you to the CosPlay fans!) and that def cut down on the thinking portion. I cut the templates out of cardstock, and then cut and glued jumbo popsicle sticks to them to make them stiff. Then covered the popsicle sticks with more cardstock, sandwiching them inside.

I then painted them with Silver Metallic paint.

I traced the handles of my scissors onto cardboard and cut them out, a total of 3 for each hand. I used different pairs of scissors for different shapes for more authenticity.

Ok, this is where things got complicated. The boys make these things called “Paper Claws”, you will have to Google how to make them, but they worked perfectly! They slip right onto your fingers and they have a little slit in them that you can slide the “Scissorhands” into to hold them.

So I painted them silver as well. I also dry brushed some black and white to make it look more like actual old metal.

Then just slide the popsicle stick/cardstock “Scissors” into the claws like so.

See how it just slides right onto your finger!

I then glued the cardboard scissor handles to the tops.

And then started gluing them onto a pair of plain black winter gloves. The easiest way to do this was to put the glove on, and then put hot glue in the claw and stick your hand in to get it nice and snug. Again, be careful not to burn yourself!

They are starting to look like the actual Scissorhands!

The last thing I did was take some of the Dollar Tree black faux leather and paint it silver and add to the top of the glove with some silver studs.

DIY Edward Scissorhands Face Makeup

This was pretty easy to accomplish. I got the absolute lightest fairest foundation I could find in the Wet n’ Wild cheapo brand, it was called “Porcelain”.

Then for the scars, I used a kids glue stick and took it and mashed it up into a thick paste, and then applied it onto their faces in lines. I tried liquid latex too, but the glue stick worked MUCH better.

The foundation glided right over it leaving a scar look underneath.

I used some dark purple eye shadow around the eyes all the way up to the eyebrows to give the look of the dark sunken eyes.

You can’t see the scars until you are up close but boy do they look cool!

This was the 2nd year that we entered a Costume Contest at the El Cajon Halloween Haunt Fest!

And we won THIRD PLACE! $25! It wasn’t first place like we won with our Beetlejuice Costumes, but hey, at least we won! Honestly EVERYONE was telling us we should have won first! This random bride girl (don’t even know who she was!?) won second (we were totally better), and a Handmade Instapot won 1st. She was pretty cool, she deserved her win!

We were a total HIT! Random strangers were literally stopping us and asking if they could take the boys pictures like they were little celebrities!

We had such a blast this Halloween! I didn’t think I could ever top the DIY Pennywise or DIY Beetlejuice ones, but we did. I truly did amaze myself! This year…Aloha Barbie in a Box and Aloha Ken (*coming soon*)

DIY your own Beetlejuice and Lydia Halloween costumes using only thrift store clothes and not only will you have best handmade costumes out there, but you’ll save a ton of money in the process too! As soon as they see that iconic black and white striped suit they’ll be screaming Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!

I’m not gonna lie, the idea to dress up as Beetlejuice for Halloween was not that of my kiddos. Did they even know who Beetlejuice was when I proposed it? No. Were they on board after watching the classic 80’s horror flick? Yes!

I actually had this idea in 2020. And we all know what year that was! But I was hesitant to put that much time, energy, and money into handmaking EPIC Beetlejuice costumes, because I wasn’t even sure we would get the chance to wear them.

So I sat on it for an entire year and in 2021 I brought the idea to fruition! This was going to be the second year that I went all out making Halloween costumes, the first year was Pennywise and they were so fabulous that I wasn’t sure I could top it!

The challenge was this….how are all 3 of us going to coordinate and dress up together? I immediately thought of Beetlejuice and Lydia, but that left one Twin out.

I didn’t want the boys to have the exact same costume so I got to thinking. What if one twin was Beetlejuice in the classic black and white suit, and the other in the maroon wedding suit?

And from there the DIY Beetlejuice and Lydia handmade Halloween costume frenzy began!

Maddox was the “traditional” Beetlejuice with the black and white suit, so his was pretty easy to shop for. I knew I’d never in a million years find a black and white striped suit, so I was just looking for all white so that I could paint the stripes. I even thrifted the black tie as well. (he may or may not have been wearing all girls clothes…shhhh don’t tell LOL)

Justice proved to be a little more difficult, but I kept on looking and got exactly what we needed. I really scored with that little girls scrunchy ruffled shirt! I don’t know what they are called, but I remember wearing them as a kid! The colors weren’t a perfect match, but it totally worked in the end.

For myself, I found the perfect old 90’s style prom dress that was bright red. Who cares that it didn’t quite fit? I only had to wear it for a night! I grabbed a red Tutu to go along with it and wore it around my neck and shoulders rather than my waist, and it looked exactly like the real deal in the wedding scene of the movie. Paired with some long red gloves I found on Amazon and the look was complete.

For the wigs, I had to spring for new ones at Spirit because I just wasn’t able to find anything thrifting. I got 2 “Benjamin Franklin” wigs and then doctored them up from there.

How to make your own DIY Beetlejuice Halloween Costumes from Thrift Store Materials

Traditional Black and White Beetlejuice Suit

I accomplished all of the black stripes by using masking tape and taping off stripes on the entire white shirt and white pants. My masking tape was super thin, so I had to use two pieces to get the right width, but if you had thick tape then one strip should do.

This was SUPER time consuming, but pretty easy to do.

Then I took black Fabric Paint and painted the entire shirt, making sure not to get any black paint on the white parts.

I let it dry completely before peeling off the tape, and when I did I was amazed by how clean and crisp the lines were!

I worked in sections at a time, because the entire process took me a good couple of days to complete. Here is how a completed sleeve looks once all done and dried.

I continued this same process on the pants, doing vertical stripes on those.

After several days and lots of patience, here is the completed Black and White striped Beetlejuice suit!

Thats pretty much the only DIYing involved for the Black and White Beetlejuice suit. Now for the Maroon Wedding Beetlejuice suit!

Maroon Wedding Beetlejuice Suit

Justice’s DIY Beetlejuice costume was far easier to make than Maddox’s since all I had to do was add some lacy trim to the sleeves and pocket.

I just hot glued the strips around the end of the sleeves, and doubled them up to make them a bit thicker.

I got a maroon bow tie on Amazon, but it was far too bright so I dirtied it up using Antique Wax.

I added some grey small polka dots to finish it off.

Thats about all we had to do to accomplish the Maroon wedding suit look.

DIY Beetlejuice Wigs

The wigs started as a Benjamin Franklin wig that looked like this….

I used scissors, my regular hair products, an old brush and green temporary hair color to transform it into DIY Beetlejuice Wigs.

I cut them up, undid the stitching (the hair is sewn in layers) from the front 2 layers to make the hairline go farther back, and basically mangled it to get the look I was going for.

Once the hair itself was Beetlejuice-y enough, I had to make the forehead look like his too. For this I used white liquid latex, Reindeer Moss, and white face powder.

I used the liquid latex as a glue to hold the Reindeer Moss on the wig forehead. You can look at reference photos while doing this to know where and how much to put (I did this same thing to the actual boys face when I did their makeup).

There wasn’t much to my Lydia costume besides just putting it on. I got black wig on Amazon that I added some red tulle to, to make it look like a veil. The best part is that I made a “Handbook for the Recently Deceased” by printing the cover image from Google, and gluing it to the front of a thrift store book.

This was the first year that we entered a Costume Contest at the El Cajon Halloween Haunt Fest!

And we won FIRST PLACE! $100! The boys were soooo excited. I think it was the first time they ever saw a $100 bill.

The only problem is that Piñatas can be super expensive and if you’re like me, you’re on a budget. So instead of buying your Piñata for next party, I’ll show you how to make a DIY one for virtually free, all you need is a few supplies and a little time!

I am known for DIY’ing the heck out of my Twins birthday parties but it wasn’t until recent years that I began DIY’ing the Pinatas too!. First it was the Pinata for their 8th YouTube birthday party. The YouTube logo is fairly simple, a square, so I gave it a go and it was a huge success! I decided to take it a step further last year and challenge myself to their 9th Super Sonic the Hedgehog birthday piñata.

From the looks of it, you’d think a piñata is super complicated to make right? It’s not! It is actually pretty easy, but it does take a good bit of time. But for the going rate of $50+ for a (small) piñata, I’ll spend the few hours to make one. Especially because the supplies needed to make it cost, drum roll please……$2! So when you do buy one, you’re definitely paying for the time, not supplies.

This DIY Pineapple Piñata actually would have been free, because I already had the cardboard, glue, crepe paper, and card stock, but I didn’t have the darn masking tape, so to Walmart I went.

If you’re planning a Hawaiian Luau party, or simply a Summer Pineapple party, than this Cool-dude Pineapple Piñata will surely be a hit with all the kiddos. Not to mention it’ll be a hit with your bank account too. Supplies Needed to Make a DIY Pineapple Piñata

1. Large cardboard box
2. Masking tape
3. Yellow Crepe paper streamers
4. Glue stick
5. Green glitter foam paper
6. Black poster board or cardstock (Optional for mouth and sunglasses)
7. Umbrella pic (Optional)
8. Habiscus flower (Optional)
9. Box cutter

How to make a Pineapple Piñata for your Birthday or Hawaiian Luau Party

Follow the below easy steps to DIY your very own Pineapple piñata with Sunglasses and save a ton money in the process.

Draw the outline of the front of the Pineapple onto the cardboard and cut it out using a box cutter.

Just do your best here. It doesn’t have to be a perfect Pineapple shape. Once you get it all decorated, you won’t even be able to tell!

Draw the outline of the Pineapple Crown onto cardboard, and cut out using a box cutter.

Be so super careful here, please! Those suckers are sharp!

Trace the outline of the Pineapple you just cut out onto another piece of cardboard and cut that out

It’s super important to trace the first one you cut out and not freehand a second one, otherwise your Pineapple will be uneven making it really hard to tape together into a 3D shape.

Cut a 5″-6″ wide strip of cardboard for the middle of the Pineapple piñata

It’s ok if you don’t cut this in all one long strip, you can do it in smaller sections if you don’t have cardboard large enough. Just cut out as long as a piece as you can, and as you go around the outline taping it, you may need to cut more to finish it up.

Corrugated cardboard works best for this since it’s bendy, but if you don’t have it you can bend, fold, and mold the cardboard to get it how you need it. Basically wear it down so that it’s super floppy and malleable, making it easier to work with in the next step.

Begin to shape the long, bendy cardboard piece around the outline of the Pineapple, securing with masking tape every 1-2 inches.

Place the backside of the Pineapple outline on top and secure with masking tape every 1-2 inches

It should be starting to look like a 3D Pineapple shape, like this!

Cut a small flap/opening for candy in the top of the middle cardboard piece, and poke 2 holes for string to hang

Cut a whole bunch of strips of yellow crepe paper streamers, some long enough to cover the front/back, and some shorter to cover the sides

Roughly measure out a bunch of strips that are longer then the length of the pinata, and cut fringes along the edges. Don’t worry about the length being exact, we’ll trim that all up later.

Use scissors to cut fringe all along each strip of crepe paper

Alternatively, you could cut the fringes after gluing them to the cardboard. I did one side each way, and I didn’t find one way to be easier than the other.

Glue the strips of yellow crepe paper across the front of the Pineapple, starting from the bottom and working your way up, overlapping them just a bit.

I found the best way to do this was to cover 6 inches of the cardboard with the glue, and then spread the crepe paper across leaving extra overhang. Don’t worry about the overhang, you will go around and trim it off nice and neat after. So just glue, and paper and cut, repeat. This does take a bit of time. You could also cut the fringe on the crepe paper after gluing it to the cardboard, but either way works!

Keep going….don’t worry about the overhang, were about to cut that off.

Trim the extra yellow crepe paper overhang from around the Pineapple outline

Repeat the same process for the back and the sides of the Pineapple Piñata

Use the cardboard Pineapple crown to trace onto the glitter foam paper, and glue to the top of the Pineapple

Cut out the green paper and glue to the front of the cardboard crown. Stick a few tooth picks into the bottom of the Pineapple Crown, and then stick them into the top of the Piñata, along with some hot glue to hold the crown in place.

Decorate the Piñata with Sunglasses and mouth

Draw the sunglasses and mouth onto black cardstock and cut them out. Use hot glue to attach to the front of the Piñata. Don’t let the word “draw” intimidate you! I have zero artistic drawing ability and I was able to pull this together. It doesn’t have to be perfect, look how crooked my sunglasses are….who cares!

If you want to be Extra like me, go ahead and add an umbrella pic and a flower to his crown.

You’re ready to fill that bad boy up with candy! Our favorite is the Mexican candy with Tamarindo and chamoy, YUM! If you don’t have a place to get that kind near you, trusty Amazon always has the huge candy bags. And don’t forget your Pinata blindfold and bat!

This DIY Pineapple Piñata is huge. Like, way too big. So don’t feel pressured to fill it allllll the way to the top or the top might break when you hang it, the string could pull right through the cardboard if it’s too heavy. Trust me, it’s happened! My twins always love filling this bad boy up!

Although this specific Piñata is made for a Hawaiian Luau party, the same concept can be applied to whatever theme you choose! Of course the shapes and colors and decorations will be different, but as long as the idea isn’t too complex it would be just as easy to make! We made a Sonic the Hedgehog Piñata last year that turned out great.

So you’re not able to go Trick or Treating this year for whatever reason, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have just as much fun. We’ve rounded up 10 of the most memorable ways you can spend Halloween night with just family and friends. Many of these trick or treat alternative ideas are still outdoors, but a few you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home. The one thing they all have in common, is that they are safe and fun!

With all the craziness that this year has brought, let’s not let it take away our fun for the Holidays too! If you are looking for an alternative way to celebrate and make memories this Halloween from the traditional door to door Trick or Treating, we’ve got you covered. All the activities on this list are family and kid-friendly and can be done while practicing safe social distancing.

Of course, you’ll have to check your local areas guidelines and make sure each of these alternative trick-or-treating options are available and open in your area. But don’t worry, if one’s not open, you’ve got plenty of backups.

Tell Scary Stories around a Bonfire

Get a huge fire going, roast some marshmallows for S’mores and tell your best scary stories “Are you Afraid of the Dark” style with the flashlight pointing up illuminating your face (you know what I mean if you’re and 80’s baby!) If Nickelodeon wasn’t your jam, I know you know Tales form the Crypt. Not only would a Scary Story Tellin’ Bonfire make for a fun Halloween night, the stories make for a trip down the 80’s memory lane. If you don’t have a backyard area for a Bonfire, check out your local beaches and parks to find one near you to hold this event.

Go Camping

Believe it or not, there are haunted campgrounds  that you can visit all around the world from Salem, Mass to St. Augustine Florida! Research one in your area here https://rvshare.com/blog/haunted-campgrounds/.

Outdoor Haunted Trail

Aside from the traditional Haunted House, there are plenty of Outdoor Haunted Trails all over the place. Here where I live in San Diego, there’s the famous Haunted Balboa Trail and although that one is closed for the 2020 season, The Drive Thru Scream Zone is open. Just Google “Haunted trails near me” to find out what is open in your neck of the woods (no pun intended).

Drive in Movies

Bring it back to the 1950’s and spend Halloween at the Drive -Ins! Instead of a movie night in, pack the family into the pick up, pop some popcorn, grab the candy corn, and head to your local drive in for Spooky (or a spookFunny) classic. Here in San Diego, several of the areas Drive-Ins are hosting special Halloween Night Movie events, some even with Costume Contests (social distancing of course), just Google “Halloween Drive-In movies near me”.

Drive by Halloween Deco Car Tour

Every city has that one neighborhood that goes alllllll out for every holiday. Ya know, the one that turns their garage into a Haunted House every year and the entire family play actor in the famous Halloween classics? Well, pack the fam into the car and go driving around looking for all the decked out houses with ghosts and ghouls!

Escape room

Filled with hidden clues and challenging puzzles, escape rooms are an adventurous way to practice your problem-solving skills and let off some steam. And if you and your friends or family can’t visit an escape room in-person this Halloween, a virtual escape room is the next best thing. Martha Stewart has rounded up the Six Virtual Escape Rooms That’ll Keep Everyone Entertained on Halloween.

Haunted Tours

Another ‘Haunted’ alternative to the indoor ‘House’ is a Ghost Tour. Haunted tours aren’t just fun and frightening; they’re also downright educational. Many of them offer both Adult Only fun, while others are Fun for the whole Fam. Here we have the San Diego Ghost Tours by Ghosts & Gravestones, but to find out what might be going on your area just Google “Haunted Walking Tours near me”.

Halloween Game Night

Some of these Halloween activities are games of skill, like cornhole, checkers, or golf with a festive twist, while others challenge kids’ memories and creative-thinking skills. Whichever Halloween party game you and the little ones decide on, it’s guaranteed to be a blast for the whole family — especially if you’ve decided to celebrate Halloween a little bit closer to home this year. While you play these games, don’t forget to blast some of the best Halloween songs and eat your favorite festive candies. All that’s sure to get the party started in no time.

From Mummy Bowling, to Pumpkin Golf, to Skeleton Puzzles, a Halloween Game night is sure to be a blast for the whole family!

These Mummy Pops are a spooky twist to the traditional coffee filter Ghost Pops that we used to make growing up. They are a perfectly cute treat for the kiddos to bring to their next school Halloween Party. Fun to make….Fun to eat!

I came up with these lil’ Mummies by accident while attempting to make Ghost Pops with felt instead of coffee filters. The felt was too thick to wrap around in one smooth cover, so I cut a piece off in an attempt to wrap and tighten the felt around the lollipop. The result was this bumpy crooked little white oblong shape on a stick- and the Mummified Lollipop was born.

I can’t wait to have the kiddos give these out at their school Halloween party this week. For the level of creativity and crafting I live and breathe on a daily basis, you’d think I’d possess at least a shred of baking skills but, Nooooooooo (not to be confused with my cooking skills- I’m a beast in the kitchen with food food). I’ve finally created my own version of the ever popular Mummy Cake Pops that even I can’t mess up.

After the kids are done begging to eat the lollipops before they are dressed to impress, they’ll have a blast making these cutie pie Mummy’s for all the kids in their class! You can make a whole Mummiful batch, or do as I did and make an entire Halloween Character Lollipop Army!

Supplies Needed to Make Mummy Lollipops

So, to get started on these bad boys you’ll need 5 things:

1. White Felt

2. Googly Eyes

3. Ribbon – black/white/pattern – it’s your choice. (I used white with BOO words).

4. Glue – E6000 is my go to but Modge Podge would work as well.

5. LOLLIPOPS! Blowpops are the fave in my house.

Of course you’ll need scissors and some sort of paper or covering to protect your work surface. As we know, kids cannot be trusted with glue, scissors, or even felt for that matter!

How to Make Mummy Lollipops

Once you’ve got all your materials, pour yourself a much deserved glass of Mummy Vino and get to crafting!

Start by cutting the white felt into two or three separate sizes.

The first will be the cover of the lollipop and should be about 4-5 inches long and 2 inches wide. Do NOT whip out your tape measure here. That would totally defeat the purpose of this quick and easy, kid friendly project. If you haven’t noticed, Mummies are not exactly the neatest, well put together little creatures.

Next, cut strips to serve as the Mummy “wrap”. I cut most of them the length of the long side of the felt, but did cut some shorter to use if I wasn’t happy with the look after the long piece was wrapped around.

Wrap the larger white felt strip around the lollipop head

Start preserving your lollipop by taking one of the larger felt pieces and folding it over the head of the lollipop leaving one end longer so that it covers about a third of the stick, and the other end wrapped just over the top.

Pinch together one side…

Fold over and hold…

Pinch and fold the other side like so…

And pinch and twist the spare material around the stick. At this point you should have a loosley covered pop that somewhat molds and holds itself in place.

Begin mummifying by taking one of the longer strips and wrapping it around the felt on the stick and up and around the pop itself.

There’s no right or wrong way to do this part, whatever looks Mummirific to you just roll with it! I had to wrap and unwrap a few times on some to get that perfect Mummy appeal but I-AM-CRAZY!

Several times I had to check myself and say, “C’mon man these are a kid treat for your 3rd graders – relax every piece does not need to be strategic and perfect. Please do not pull a me on that one!

When your done with the long wrap you’ll likely have an oblong little guy that is so ugly it’s cute. Here is where you utilize those small strips as cosmetic surgery.

And VIOLA…..!!!

This part is totally optional but it definitely plays to the cute appeal. Take some ribbon and tie a bow around the bottom and wrap it up and around the lollipop head.

Glue on some googly eyes…

And you have got yourself a bon-a-fide Mummy Pop!!

I sent these to my boys school last year and they were super excited to share with their class and their teachers how they made treats for everyone!

So, if your looking for a kiddie treat, having a Halloween Party, or even just feel like being festive and bringing something to share at the office on this spooktacular day- these lil Mummy treats will surely be preserved for years to come!

I am so excited that the ultimate crafting season is right around the corner! I know, I know, it’s only July. But let’s face it, the season starts earlier and earlier each year so let the craft project fun begin!

No party is complete without a Pinata full of candy, but that can get pretty pricey year over year. Instead of buying your Sonic the Hedgehog pinata, you can actually make one with just a few supplies! DIY this super easy Sonic Pinata for your Sonic the Hedgehog birthday party, and it’s sure to be hit!

I am known for DIY’ing the heck out of my Twins birthday parties but it wasn’t until last year that took it as far as to make the Pinata for their 8th YouTube birthday party. The YouTube logo is fairly simple, a square, so I gave it a go. It was such a success that I decided to take it a step further this year and take a stab at their 9th Super Sonic the Hedgehog birthday pinata.

From the looks of it, you’d think a pinata is super complicated to make right? It’s not! It is actually really easy, it’s just a bit time consuming. But for the going rate of $50+ for a (small) pinata, I’ll spend the few hours to make one. Especially because the supplies needed to make it cost, drum roll please……$2! So when you do buy one, you’re definitely paying for the time, not supplies.

This particular pinata actually cost me only $1 to make because I already had the cardboard, glue, masking tape, and card stock, so the ONLY thing I had to buy, which was from the Dollar Tree, was crepe paper (streamers).

If you’re planning a Sonic the Hedgehog party, the kiddos will just LOVE this DIY Sonic Pinata (and so will your wallet). If you are DIY’ing the whole Sonic party like we did, make sure to check out these DIY Sonic Golden rings that we used for props and centerpieces. As well as these DIY Palm trees we used as a backdrop to replicate the actual Sega game.

Supplies Needed to Make a DIY Sonic the Hedgehog Pinata

1. Large cardboard box
2. Masking tape
3. Crepe paper- blue (streamers)
4. Glue stick
5. Construction paper– Tan, white, black
6. Box cutter

How to make a Sonic the Hedgehog Pinata for your Party

Follow the below easy steps to DIY your very own Sonic pinata and save a ton money in the process.

Draw the outline of the front of Sonic onto the cardboard

Just do your best here. I am SO FAR from being any sort of artist, but I just looked at the picture and sketched the outline. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Once you get it all decorated, you won’t even be able to tell if it’s not.

Cut out the cardboard Sonic outline using the box cutter

Be so super careful here, please! Those suckers are sharp!

Trace the outline you just cut out onto another piece of cardboard and cut that out

Cut a 5″ wide strip of cardboard for the middle of the Sonic pinata

This piece will end up being about 6 ft. long, but you don’t have to cut it all in one strip. Just cut out as long as a piece as you can, and as you go around the outline taping it, you may need to cut more to finish it up. Bend, fold, mold and bend the cardboard more. Basically wear it down so that it’s super floppy and malleable, making it easier to work with in the next step.

Begin to shape the long, bendy cardboard piece around the outline of the Sonic, securing with masking tape every 1-2 inches.

I found it easier to bend it around the jagged “hedgehog hair” part first, and then go back and tape it once it has been molded. Continue until you make it all the way around the Sonic outline. The hardest part is done!

Place the backside of the Sonic outline on top and secure with masking tape every 1-2 inches

Cut a small flap/opening for candy in the top of the middle cardboard piece, and poke 2 holes for string to hang

Use scissors to cut fringe all along each strip of crepe paper

Roughly measure out a bunch of strips that are longer then the length of the pinata, and cut fringes along the edges. Don’t worry about the length being exact, we’ll trim that all up later.

Alternatively, you could cut the fringes after gluing them to the cardboard. I did one side each way, and I didn’t find one way to be easier than the other.

Make this Easter Egg-stra special with this free printable Easter Basket Scavenger Hunt. The kids will just LOVE following the clues left by the Easter Bunny all around the house to find their baskets!

I know this is not the Easter anyone had imagined, but it is still Easter.

 Life doesn’t always go the way we had planned, and you know what they say about life?

You thought I was going to say lemons!

I wanted to share a few things we are doing to make this Easter egg-stra special. My Twinsies (Justice and Maddox) and I usually follow a pretty strict regimen of tradition when it comes to Holidays, but this year I am stepping outside of the box.

That’s why I created this super fun Easter Basket Scavenger Hunt, as well as these Easter Basket Stuffer Treat Coupons, since it may be difficult to get to the store for the traditional Easter basket treats.

Free Printable Easter Basket Scavenger Hunt

Make Easter morning egg-stra fun and instead of leaving the Easter Baskets right out in the open for the kids to wake up to (I mean the Easter Bunny leaves them, of course), have them  follow the clues to lead them to a surprise! I think this one may just stick for our house and become the new tradition.

How an Easter Scavenger Hunt Works

This scavenger hunt is a little fancier than the typical checklist of items to hunt for and check off as you find them. This one takes mini detective casework. 

The Easter Bunny hides the baskets, and then leaves clues which lead the children from one clue to the next, and finally to the surprise- their Easter Baskets! Of course, the clues are adorable Easter themed and made up of cutesy little hoppity rhymes.

How to Set the Scavenger Hunt Up

Print out the one page set of clues, and you will need multiple copies depending on the number of kids playing.

Cut up the clues using scissors, or if your feeling extra fancy you can use a Cricut Paper Trimmer.

You then hide the clues around the house.  You can fold them and hide them, or you can place them inside plastic eggs and hide those.

I think the plastic egg route is the best way to go if you have more than one kid, so you can give each one their own color egg and they won’t mix up who’s clues are who’s. Just mix up the order of the clues and make sure to leave the last clue the same so it leads them to the basket!

Scavenger Hunt Clues

Clue #1– Happy Easter! Are you ready to hunt for your treat, the first clue is where you brush your teeth.  Somewhere near your bathroom sink.

Clue #2- There’s Bunnies, and Chicks, and Lambs were told, the next clue is where your food stays cold. In the refrigerator. 

Clue #3- He hips and he hops while you sleep in your bed, the next clue is where you lay your head. Under their pillow

Clue #4- There’s an Egg-cellent surprise just for you, but first you must look where you take off your shoes. Inside of a shoe or near the front/back door.

Clue #5- He brings treats, he brings sweets, for good girls and boys. The next hint might be found with your toys. In their toy bin/area.

Clue #6- You found all the clues, now wasn’t that fun? You’ll find your surprise where bathing is done! Inside the bathtub.

I hope this fun scavenger hunt shines a light on this Easter and helps to make some memories that will last a lifetime.
