The sun is shining and It feels like Summer with this Fabric Sunflower Mason Jar decor. Take a Dollar Tree wooden mason jar and give it cheerful crafty makeover with some fabric, sticks from your yard, wooden shims and good ‘ole cardboard. You had me at “Sunflower”!
I am a sunflower lover through and through. Some may even say that I have OSD (Obsessive Sunflower Disorder). I literally cannot stop making sunflower crafts and decor, and I never will!
My most recent crafty creation was a Cheerful Fabric Sunflower and I have about 239 more things on my craft “to-do” list to add to that. It’s an addiction really.
Knowing that I am OSD, one of my crafty Facebook friends sent me these fabulous fabric sunflowers, and I had been waiting for the perfect thing to make with them. Well, I think I’ve found it. This DIY Fabric Sunflower Mason Jar was just the thing!
I don’t have the steps to make the Fabric Sunflowers themselves in this post since they were gifted to me, but we did have a workshop learning to make them in my subscription crafting group, The CRafterparty, so if you’re interested in learning how to make things like that then you may want to consider joining!

How to Make a Mason Jar with Fabric Sunflowers
I made this adorable DIY Wooden Rainbow Sunflower on video, so you can WATCH the step by step tutorial HERE or right below.
Watch the video tutorial here.
First things first let’s make the wooden shim background. I just cut a rectangle of cardboard about 14″ x 8″, to be the base. Then glue wooden whims alternating thick/thin ends and leaving about 1″ overhang on each end to give it the jig-jaggety (is that a word?) look.
Next, stain the entire thing with Waverly Wax or stain. Make the surface “chippy” by applying Vaseline randomly in spots to create a “barrier” between the paint and the surface. Wherever you put the Vaseline, is where the paint will “chip” off after we paint over it. I have a more detailed explanation in this post HERE if you want to check that out, or you can WATCH THE REPLAY on Facebook to see how it’s done!
Paint a nice thick layer of white paint right on over the surface on top of the Vaseline, being careful to not work the paint into it. Then give it a dry with your heat gun until the top layer is completely dry and the underneath may be a tad moist still. Take a paint scraper and drag it across the surface to “chip” the paint to your liking.
Next, cover the entire bottom of the mason jar with buffalo check fabric, and glue the galvanized metal heart front and center.
Add a small raffia bow to the top of the mason jar.
Now glue some regular sticks from your yard coming out of your mason jar as the “Stems” of the Fabric Sunflowers, adn add some faux green leaves and sprigs for decoration.
Finish it off by gluing your Fabric Sunflowers to the ends of the stick stems to complete your DIY Mason Jar! How cute!
This DIY Fabric Sunflower Mason Jar is the perfect addition to your spring and summer decor! I just love the bright and cheerful feel that Sunflowers bring to a room.
