Pine cones are natures free craft supplies and with a big ‘ole bag of them and a foam cone you can make a gorgeous Pine Cone Christmas Tree to add to your DIY Christmas decor this holiday season!
I had been wanting to make one of these uh-maz-ing Pine Cone Christmas Trees for the longest time and we finally made one as my first ever paid live workshop that we had on Zoom!
These trees look like they would be really difficult to make, but they are actually fairly easy. Just a little time consuming and takes a bit of patience, but once its done you have a beautiful masterpiece to display for Christmas!
The best part of this workshop? We did it in JULY! For Christmas in July! You can’t tell in this pic, but I’ve got on shorts with that T-shirt.
Hence the Patriotic and summer crafts and decor in the background LOL!
Lucky for you, I made a Pine Cone Christmas Tree before we had the live workshop, so I was able to get some photos of the process for you and give you this free tutorial.
So go to your backyard or the nearest park, grab you a bag of Pine Cones, and I’ll show you how to make this Pine Cone Christmas Tree!

How to Make a Pine Cone Christmas Tree
You can use any size Pine Cones to make this Christmas Tree, and they do not have to be the same size, although they can. If you are using different sizes like me, then I would use the larger cones at the base, and as you work your way up use the smaller ones.
My pine cones were 5″, 4″, and 3″ as you can see below.
Use a bowl or something round to trace and cut a circle out of cardboard for the base. Mine was about 8″ diameter. It should extend about 2″ around the foam cone, so that the base pine cones have something to rest on.
Glue your foam cone to the center of the cardboard base.
Now for the fun part! We glue!
Using a generous amount of glue, and taking your time to make sure each one properly dries, begin to glue the pine cones around the base of the foam cone using the largest cones that you have.
Work your way all the way around the base of the cone getting the pine cones as close together as possible, but don’t worry about any gaps as we will fill them in later.
Continue to work your way up the foam cone, using the smaller pine cones as you go (if you have different sizes).
Here’s what it looks like from above. It doesn’t have to be perfect or even, any blank spots will be filled in with greenery so that you cant see the foam cone.
Once you get all the way to the top, pick the perfect cone to put directly on top standing up to finish off the shape of the tree.
Once you are all done, you probably have a bunch of spots where the pine cones didn’t quite fit together and you can see the foam cone in between.
Now you’ll take your greenery picks and stick them in each spot to fill them in. You should be able to stick them right into the cone, and shouldn’t even need any glue.
Add a string of portable fairy lights or battery operated lights from Dollar Tree to really up the beauty on this!
Put the finishing touch on your Pine Cone Christmas Tree by gluing a gold star on top (Or whatever tree topper you like).
I craft with Pine Cones alllllll the time, have you seen the Pine Cone Heart Wreath we made for Valentines? What have YOU made with Pine Cones?
