Share the Love!
Show Dad just how important he is with this “DAD You’re My Rock” hand print door-stopper gift! Dad will just love both the message and the little Hand prints. Makes for a precious keepsake gift for Father’s Day and can be made with just a few supplies!
Father’s Day is just around the corner, June 21st to be exact. Rather than get him another T-Shirt he’ll wear once, why not make him a hand (print) made gift!?
Handmade Gifts are the Best
As with Mother’s Day, I am all about the handmade gifts, especially when it comes from the kiddos. Handmade gifts are so much fun to make, and hold so much more meaning too! The kiddos will love getting their hands all messy (Mine sure did), and Dad will just adore the “DAD You’re My Rock” message.
This “Dad You’re My Rock” gift can actually be useful too. It can serve as a door stopper, a garden decoration, or even a front porch ornament. The paint is sealed with Acrylic Sealer so it’s perfectly fine for outdoors (because who would want a rock inside really).
The best part about this one is that it only requires a few supplies and you may already have them on hand. We found the rock in a nearby park (it may or may not have been part of the landscape shhhhh), but I know that they sell them at Home Depot for about $10 you can get a few of them.Â

Supplies Needed to Make a “DAD You’re My Rock” Handmade Gift
- Large Rock – We found ours outside in a nearby park, but you can get them at Home Depot)
- Paint – (We used Yellow, Aquamarine, Bright Red, and Jack-O-Lantern)
- Aleene’s Gloss Acrylic Sealer
- Alphabet Stencils (Optional)
- Paper plate (you could also use newspaper or something else you can spread the paint to make the hand print)
How to Make a “DAD You’re My Rock” Handmade Gift
Follow these super easy steps to make this hand (print) made rock!
Wash rock with soap and water
This step may not be necessary if you bought your rock, however, if you found it in the great outdoors you’ll want to wash it real good. This helps the paint look better and dries cleaner.
Squirt paint on a paper plate and spread thinly
The kiddos love getting their hands messy, so don’t be shy with the paint!
Dip the kids hands in the paint and then make a print on the rock
I have Twins, so we did one of each hand print. If only one child is involved, you can choose to do just one hand print, or you can do each hand, it’s up to you (or them)! If you have 3 or more kids…..well your gonna need a bigger rock.
Stencil or draw the message around the prints
Make sure that the previous letter is fully dry before moving onto the next. If the stencils overlap the wet letters they’ll smudge and make a mess of your message.
Alternatively, you can draw the message on freehand
If you want to get clever like we did, set it up so that the “R” serves as the “‘re” and is the first letter of the word “Rock”. So it reads DAD You R My Rock”. Saves room on your rock to do it that way too.
Spray with sealer once paint is fully dry
This step NEEDS TO BE DONE OUTDOORS in a well ventilated area. Follow the directions for use on the back of the can to apply two coats of sealer on the rock. It works best to apply several light coats rather than one heavy coat. Hold the can at least 6 inches from the rock and coat evenly.
Allow to fully dry and give to Dad!
Dad can use this to prop open the door of his Man Cave, or a decoration in his garden. No matter what he does with this hand (print) made gift he will always remember that he is “Your ROCK!”
Until Next Time…
