Dollar Tree gift bags aren’t just for holding gifts and treats to give to others, they make great DIY’s too! Turn this Pink and Gold Heart gift bag into a beautiful DIY Valentine Heart Sign with just a few supplies, and better yet, just a few dollars!
I saw this adorbs pink and gold heart gift bag on one of my many many trips to Dollar Tree, and I instantly knew I had to craft with it! There is something about the Pink and Gold that is so fun, yet elegant at the same time. Plus, it will match perfectly with my Pink Ombre Pine Cone Heart Wreath I made last week!
You could make this DIY Dollar Tree Gift Bag Valentine Sign a variety of ways, but I chose to use good ‘ole cardboard. My motto is, “If you don’t have wood, use cardboard”. Not only is the backing made of cardboard, but the heart is too! If you have foam board that would work as well, but you have to be careful because it will warp more easily when it gets wet from the Mod Podge, so you may need to use a popsicle stick or something as a brace on the back.

I’ve seen wood hearts with the center cut out like this one, but I didn’t have one on hand and I really wanted the center cut out so you could see more of the Pink and Gold Hearts on the Dollar Tree gift bag. If ya ask me, I can’t even tell it’s not wood! And this same technique could be used with gift bags for every Holiday or occasion. They make great Christmas DIY’s for sure!
There’s not a ton of in progress pics here, but I made this DIY Gift Bag sign on a Facebook Live, so there is a video to watch if you want a more detailed step-by-step.

- Metallic Gold Paint

How to make a DIY Valentine Sign out of a Dollar Tree Gift Bag
Follow the below easy steps to make a DIY Dollar Tree Gift Bag Valentine Sign!
First, remove the ribbon handle from the top of the gift bag and set it aside to use later for the hanger.
Cut out the front of your gift bag. Usually the gift bag is double sided, so make sure to save the other side for another project.
Use the gift bag as a tracer on the cardboard so that you know how large of a piece you need, and cut it out.
Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the cardboard, and apply the gift bag on top, smoothing out the surface as you go. You shouldn’t have to worry too much about bubbles or wrinkles because the gift bag is nice and thick. Be careful not to use too much Mod Podge or the cardboard may warp.
Draw a heart onto another piece of cardboard. You can freehand this if you like, but if you’re artistically challenged like me, you can simply print a heart template and use that as a tracer. Once you have the heart outline, draw a smaller heart inside and cut that out.
Paint the cardboard Gold. I applied 2 coats to get a nice vibrant gold finish.
Using the glue gun, glue the nautical rope around the outer and inner rims of the cardboard heart. It’s easiest to go a little bit at a time, applying glue, then securing the rope. Apply glue, than secure rope, a few inches at a time so that the glue doesn’t dry on you.
Glue small pieces of cardboard or foam board to the back of the gold painted heart, so that it will be raised off of the surface of the gift bag. This give your Valentine sign some depth and dimension so the heart is not just flat on the bag. Next, glue the raised heart onto the gift bag.
Paint the wooden beads gold to match the heart. The easiest way to do this is to put them in a small bowl with some paint and swirl them around.
String the beads onto the ribbon handle that we took off in the beginning, and glue the gold beaded hanger to the back of the cardboard Valentine sign.
Last, make a cute little bow as an embellishment for the top of the sign. To make this simple “Bow” (if you can even call it that), just lay a 2-3 inch piece of wired ribbon down, with another piece of coordinating ribbon on top. Dove tail the ends and tie a piece of string or twine around the center. You can then make a small shoelace bow out of twine, and glue that right on top. Easy, peasy, and cute!
