If you haven’t already picked up one of these USA cutouts from the Dollar Tree for July 4th, you’re gonna wanna make a pit stop after seeing this beautiful patriotic DIY! This Dollar Tree USA Freedom Flag looks like a high end piece of decor from Hobby Lobby, but it was made right here in my living room for under $5! Nothing says Red, White and Blue like a Dollar Tree DIY!
Ok, I know that I said that my Antique Patriotic Star was my fave DIY of the July Fourth Holiday season, but I lied. #Sorrynotsorry THIS is my fave patriotic DIY of the July Fourth Holiday season! This Dollar Tree USA Freedom Flag takes the cake (and the fireworks!) But, the Rustic Star is still top 3!
Don’t worry if you don’t have an old songbook like the one that I used for this. You can totally buy music sheet scrapbook paper at any craft store, or on good ‘ole Amazon. or you can even print digital scrapbook paper or an actual image of music sheets from Google right onto copy paper. When there’s a will, there’s a way!
It’s worth the hunt for the music sheets, because it looks sooooo fabulous with the American Flag paper. The only thing better would be if the written music was from “The Star Spangled Banner”! Now that would be a match made in American heaven.
There’s a secret weapon I used for this Patriotic DIY that makes alllllll the difference in how it turns out. Without it, you won’t get that old, dingy, tattered look that you see here. Are you ready for it….Antique Wax! If you know, you know. And if you don’t, well then I suggest you find out!

How to Make a Dollar Tree USA Flag DIY
I made this antique looking Dollar Tree USA Freedom Flag sign on video, so you can WATCH the step by step tutorial HERE or right below.

Time needed: 1 hour and 30 minutes
How to make a Dollar Tree USA Freedom Flag
- Mod podge the music sheet paper to the wooden surface.
- Mod Podge the American Flag paper to the front of the USA wooden cutout.
Trace the wooden cutout onto the back of the flag paper and cut it out. Make sure to trace it so that you have the blue with stars in the top left, and the red and white stripes on the rest of it. Don’t worry about the shape being perfect, we will sand it after and clean it up.
- Using a wooden sanding sponge and/or a nail file, sand all of the excess American Flag paper off of the edge of the USA cutout.
Once you’re done it should look like it was made that way!
- Glue the American Flag USA to the front of the music sheet background using wooden craft cubes in between to raise it up and give it dimension.
If you don’t have the craft cubes you can use Jenga blocks, or even a piece of foam or cardboard.
- Cut a strip of Burlap, and glue it to the bottom underneath the USA with the word “freedom” spelled out in Scrabble Tiles.
You can choose any word you like, it doesn’t have to be freedom! You could put USA, Home of the Brave, Let Freedom Ring, or whatever suits your fancy.
- Glue the nautical rope around the outer edge of the wooden surface to give it a more finished look.
- Add some Antique wax to the entire project to give it a rustic, dingy, and old look and feel.
Make sure to go all around the egde of the USA shape, in between where the nautical rope meets the wooden surface, and around the Scrabble tiles. Basically get in all the little nooks and cranny’s where dirt would naturally go. Add as much or as little of the wax as you like.
I said it once, and I’ll say it again. I am obsessed with how this Dollar Tree Patriotic Freedom DIY turned out! It looks so fabulous with my Antique Rustic Star and my little Patriotic Burlap Star, it really kicked my Fourth of July decor up a notch!
