Sometimes it’s the simplest little projects that pack the biggest punch, and that’s exactly the case for this Patriotic Burlap Star. This adorable little red, white, and blue star is the perfect addition to your Americana decor and would look just fabulous on your tiered tray for the Fourth if July!
Crafting doesn’t have to be hard, complicated, or expensive to be super duper cute. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a challenging DIY that really presses my creativity and skills every now and then, but for the most part I think it’s the simplest projects that pack the biggest punch. Especially when you do a lot of seasonal crafting like for the Fourth of July, you can’t be doing projects that take days on end to complete!
That’s exactly what I was going for when creating this Patriotic Burlap Star! I needed a smaller piece to compliment the ‘Gnome of the Brave’ sign and Rustic Patriotic Star I’d made, and this adorable little DIY was born! I think this bad boy took a total of 25 minutes from start to finish.
I’d say that the 4th of July was my favorite holiday to craft and decorate for, but that would be a lie because I truly love all of them! I usually craft so much for the 4th of July that by the time it’s over, I’m ready to start fall. Call me crazy, but in the meantime, let me show you how easy this Patriotic Burlap Star is to make!

Supplies needed to make a Patriotic Burlap Star
- Mini pallet board (I got mine from Michaels Stores)
- Burlap
- Red, White, and Blue paint (I added a drop of black to my red and blue to get a more deep colored star)
- Patriotic colored small ribbon (I used some scrap pieces of fabric and ribbon that I had on hand)
- Glue Gun
How to Make a Red, White and Blue Painted Star DIY
I made this cute American Burlap Star on video, so you can WATCH the step by step tutorial HERE or right below.
The steps to make this cutie are so simple, are you ready?
First, you’re going to cut the shape of the star out of a piece of burlap. You can freehand this, print a tracer off of good ‘ole Google, or do like I did and use a wooden start to trace it onto the burlap.
Now you’re going to paint the burlap star with the red, white, and blue paint. I made the mistake of using wayyyyy too much paint, so just know that the burlap only needs a light coat on the top. Don’t saturate it like I did or you’ll make a mess for yourself.
Once your star is all painted you can either let it air dry, or blast it with a heat gun or blow dryer until it’s completely dry, and then glue it to your mini pallet board. Hot glue will do the trick here!
Now to make the bow. This bow is so stupid easy I don’t think it even deserves to be called a bow! Just take several strips of ribbon, burlap, and fabric, and layer them on top of each other in an “X” , and tie a piece of twine around the center. Trim it up and fluff as necessary. The more variety of textures and sizes of ribbon, the more full and fabulous your little bow will be.
And that is literally it! 3 steps to this adorable Patriotic Burlap Star that will look fabulous with your Americana decor, or as a little filler piece for your July 4th tiered tray. Isn’t it cute?!
