Sunflowers and pumpkins and fall leaves oh my! This Fall Scrap Fabric Sunflower has all the Fall Feels and vibes, you can practically smell the pumpkin spice in the air just looking at it. “Gather” up your scrap fabric, some sticks from your yard, and your favorite fall sweater and let’s get to crafting!
When I saw this bundle of sunflower and fall patterned fabric at Walmart, something told me to grab not one, but two rolls of it and I’m so happy that I did! I have been crafting up a storm with this beautiful fabric starting with the Dollar Tree Patchwork Pumpkin I made last week!
We’re in full fledge fall crafting mode over in this house (Say that 10x fast). You can blame that on Hobby Lobby because every since I was the adorable Sunflower and Pumpkin napkins to craft with, I’ve been sucked in I just can’t go back to the summer vibes. It’s also been a bajillion degrees this summer so that doesn’t help, I’m totally ready for #SweaterWeather! Even though I’m in San Diego and Sweater Weather is like 69 degrees.
Can I just tell you how much I am obsessed with Sunflowers?! I have OSD…..Obsessive Sunflower Disorder. I enjoy them year round, don’t get me wrong, but I reallllllyy super enjoy them for fall decor. If there is any way at all to work a Sunflower into one of my crafts, then trust me I’m gonna do it. #SunflowerLover
You could make this Fall Scrap Fabric Sunflower in any pattern or color scheme that matches your fall decor, it certainly doesn’t have to be the orange, yellows, and browns that you see here. in fact, aside from the last 2 DIY’s I’ve done, I’m decorating with lots of teals, yellows and buffalo checks which you’ll see with my next project, this adorbs burlap and sunflower pumpkin! *coming soon
Until then, let’s make a Fall Fabric Sunflower to add to your IDY decor this pumpkin spice season!

How to Make a Fall Scrap Fabric and Burlap Sunflower
I made this amazing Fall Fabric Sunflower on video, so you can WATCH the step by step tutorial HERE or click on the picture right below.
This Fall Fabric Sunflower is so easy to make, that even the kiddos could do it. In fact, I think they’d love to help so let them make their own little version too.
First thing we’re gonna do is cut the petals out of the fabric and the burlap. Mine were about 3-4 inches long and once I drew and cut one that I liked the shape, I used that as a template to cut the others. Then cut about 4 petals a little bit smaller than the rest. These ones will be on top.
Now let’s prepare our surface. I used the back of a Dollar Tree wooden sign, and it worked perfectly. I’ll explain the best I can here, but if you want to WATCH how I did it, make sure to check out the video.
I chose to make my surface look “chippy”, using Vaseline and white paint. Use an old paint brush to brush Vaseline along the surface of the wood, applying it haphazardly in random places, but do NOT cover the entire surface. Make some spots a little thicker covered, some just a thin amount of Vaseline. Think of it this way, wherever the Vaseline is, the paint will “chip” in the next step. This doesn’t have to be perfect, just play around with it. It takes some practice to get it just right, but don’t worry the Fabric Sunflower petals will be covering most of the sign anyway, just have fun!
Paint a thick coat of white paint over the entire sign, right on top of the Vaseline. Now, take a heat gun or blow-dryer and dry the top coat of the white paint until its mostly dry, but the underside of the paint is still wet. It should be dry to the touch so that when you touch it with your finger, your finger does not get white. Now, take a paint scraper, and drag it lightly across the surface, focusing on the spots that had the Vaseline. Adjust the pressure you use as you go depending on if it’s “chipping” to your liking. Do this as little or as much as you like until it has the look your going for.
Now let’s Mod Podge our Fabric and Burlap Sunflower petals to our surface. I recommend arranging them first to see how they look and spread out the different pattern fabric. Then use a paint brush to paint the Mod Podge onto the fabric and glue the larger petals first, and the smaller ones on top.
Now glue your wooden round to the center. And glue your sticks as the Sunflowers stem.
Paint your wooden “Gather” cutout mustard or whatever color you choose, an orange would look great too! Glue the word to the bottom left of the Fall Fabric Sunflower.
Now for the finishing touches, hot glue the nautical rope around the rim of the entire wooden surface. This is necessary, but I think if gives it a more polished look.
There we have it! You’ve got yourself an ADORBS Fall Scrap Fabric and Burlap Sunflower to add to your DIY Fall decor this year! And boy does this one look fabulous with my Sunflower and Pumpkin Reverse Canvas!
