All you need to make these Twine Ball Ornaments is some sort of circular object for the base. I happened to have some Styrofoam balls leftover from the Pine Cone Penguin and Pine Cone Snowman I made a few weeks back, but you could use a clear plastic DIY bulb, or whatever else you can find in that stash of yours. To decorate the Twine wrapped ball I used some leftover red sheer ribbon, white and gold “Joy” ribbon, and a pine sprig because that’s what I had, but I encourage you to get creative and use up little bits and pieces of things you have leftover from previous projects. This is a great “use it up” craft!
This blog post is more of an inspirational type post to get you thinking about what kind of handmade ornaments you may want to make with things you already have on hand, than it is an actual step-by-step tutorial. I will do my best to walk you through exactly how I made this, but I encourage you to use your creativity and give your ornament your own unique flair.
Supplies needed to make a Handmade Twine Ball Christmas Ornament
- White Styrofoam ball
- Twine -Jute Cord (226g)
- Pine and berry picks
- Holiday ribbon of your choice (we used sheer red and white “Joy”)
- Glue gun
How to Make a Twine Christmas Tree Ornament using a Foam Craft Ball
Follow the below easy steps to make a Handmade Twine Wrapped Ball Ornament for your Christmas Tree
Wrap and glue the twine around the styrofoam ball
*Note: Leave the twine on the spool while completing this step. Do not cut ahead of time because it is impossible to know how much you will need.
Put a dab of glue onto the top of the ball, and attach the end of the twine. Once the glue has dried and the end of the twine is secured, begin to apply glue in a spiral fashion while wrapping the twine around the ball.
It is easiest to go a little bit at a time, gluing then wrapping twine, and repeat. Be careful not to burn yourself and to be extra safe, finger protectors would be best to use for this project.
When you get about halfway through covering the ball, it gets a little more difficult to get the twine to wrap and stay nice and tightly with the previous strip so you may want to cut the twine and then start again at the other end, meeting back in the middle.
I noticed that it was getting more difficult once I past the halfway point, but I continued to wrap it before finally deciding to restart at the other end. In hindsight, I should have stopped exactly halfway through and then restarted at the end for a neater finished project. Oh well, Live and Learn from my mistakes!
Once you start wrapping from the other end, just continue until you meet the end of the twine where you stopped wrapping before, and cut and glue in place. Once your done, you won’t even be able to tell that it was one continuous string of twine.
Make a loop to hang the ornament on the Christmas tree
Cut a piece of twine approximately 8″ long. Glue the ends to the top of the Twine Wrapped Ball to make a loop. There should be a small opening where you started wrapping the twine around the ball, and you can kind of stuff the ends of the loop down into the hole.
Time to decorate your handmade Twine Wrapped Ball
I added a strip of leftover red sheer ribbon around the center of the wrapped twine ornament and glued together in the back with a thin line of hot glue so that you couldn’t see it.
Next, make a simple shoelace bow with a piece of thin ribbon of your choice. Glue that to the top along with a sprig of Pine and Pine Cone with Berries.
What a cute rustic glam little DIY we made with leftover craft scraps! Nothing has more character than a Christmas Tree full of handmade ornaments and this Twine Ball makes the perfect addition to our tree this year!
