Let’s make a SWEET budget friendly version of a very expensive Watermelon “Hello Summer” Door Hanger. DIY Front door decor for your home for the win!
I do a LIVE crafting series over on good ole’ Facebook called Copycat or Floppycat. This is where people send me pics of things they love that they see either online or in stores, and I see if I can make a copycat version for cheaper.
After I make it everyone votes on whether they think I did a good job (copycat), or if it was a FLOP (Floppycat)!
For this one we re-made the VERY expensive Hello Summer Watermelon Door Hanger that was found on Etsy for $62+ (pic below). I was able to make it with a wood round and other supplies from my stash.
The Etsy store shop name that this screenshot came from is Nine Twenty Four Designs, and if you would rather buy this one then make it, you can do that HERE.
Let me just say, I am ALLL about supporting other crafters and small business owners on Etsy, but there is also absolutely NOTHING wrong with making something yourself for cheaper if you can. I think it WOULD be wrong, however, to go and sell it on Etsy. Jus’ Sayin’
If you had to go and buy the things to make this one, I’d say it would cost you about $5-10 ! All ya need is a wood round, paint, fabric for bow, and vinyl words or stencils.
And that my friend is how you copycat!

How to Make a Hello Summer Watermelon Door hanger
I made this Watermelon Door Hanger on video. So you can WATCH the tutorial by clicking below.
First, I took a large bowl that was slightly smaller than the wood circle and traced it onto center of the circle. This will be the guide for the outer rind edge.
Then, I took a smaller paint brush and painted the wavy white line on top of the circle line that I drew with the bowl. This is going to be the divider between the outer green rind and the inner red watermelon fruit.
Next I mixed up some red and pink paint to make the perfect watermelon color and painted the entire center.
Next, I painted the entire outer edge with bright green.
Then I went over the top of that and made light green stripes.
On the left and right of each stripe, I added a curved black line like you see below.
I used my Frixion pen to draw the watermelon seed outlines first, and then traced them with black sharpie.
Then I colored them in with black paint and added a white highlight line to the side of each seed like you see below.
Next, I applied my Cricut vinyl “Hello Summer” to the center.
I made a super easy bow by just cutting a bunch of strips of ribbon and then layering them on top of each other in an X formation, and tying a piece of string around the center.
Then I glued it to the top of my Watermelon Door Hanger and glued a black button to the center.
Lastly, I glued a piece of black and white bakers twine to the top back as a hanger.
I think this is just the absolute cutest and so perfect for SUMMER!
This is such a fabulous alternative to paying over $60 for one on Etsy. If you have it in the budget and don’t want to make it, then by all means buy away, but if you’re on a budget like ya girl here is, then get to crafting.
