If you have been saving those empty egg carton containers, now is their time to shine with this Patriotic Egg Carton Star Wreath! This recycled craft is the perfect DIY 4th of July decoration, and the best part is you only need 3 materials to make it.
We’ve gone a little CoronaCraftCrazy this July 4th season. Maybe it’s to make up for the fact that we won’t be enjoying our July 4th Fireworks Festival, or maybe its because we just love our Red, White, and Blue. Either way, I am happy with the turnout of all of our July 4th Celebration Crafts!
I got the inspiration for the this Patriotic Egg Carton Star Wreath while strolling the seasonal section of Walmart. I saw something very similar (but much larger)for about $20, and thought “I could totally make that for free with an egg carton”. So, I DID!
I used one of those large cases of eggs you get at Costco, ya know the ones that have like 50+ egg cups? But if you don’t buy them by the case like we do, you would just need to save 4-5 regular egg cartons. Our egg carton star wreath used 25 egg cups, doubled. So a total of 50. They take a bit to cut them all out, but don’t worry, your hand goes numb after the first 12 so the rest is a breeze (kidding!).

How to Make a Patriotic Egg Carton Star Wreath
Follow the below steps to make a DIY Patriotic Egg Carton Star Wreath for the 4th of July or any American holiday.
Cut out the individual egg cups
I find it easiest to cut out chunks at a time, of maybe 3-4 in a row, and then cut them out individually from there. Its a tedious process no matter what.
All egg cartons are not created equally, so you may have ones that don’t have nice rounded tops. If that’s the case, you will want to round off all of the edges so that you have nice smoothish egg carton cups. If they resemble the game at the arcade with the claw that comes down to grab the stuffed animal, you’ve got some rounding of edges to do! See the difference in the below picture? We want them looking like the cup on the right.
Paint the egg carton cups red, white, and blue
The egg cups will be doubled so you need to have an even amount of each color. To make the exact wreath as we did you will need to paint 12 red, 14 blue, and 24 white cups. Allow them to fully dry before moving onto the next step so that they are hardened and the glue dries properly.
Cut a slit halfway through the middle of each of the egg cups
Curl and roll each egg cup around itself, and glue in place
The bottom egg carton cup should be rolled more loosely, like this…
And the inner or top cup should be rolled more tightly, like this…
That way they will fit snugly inside each other, like this…
The bottom egg cup of each pair will be rolled and glued a bit looser than the top egg cup, so that the top one is smaller and fits into the bottom one snugly.
Draw a star outline onto the cardboard (or foam board)
Glue the paired egg cups onto the cardboard (foam board) in a star formation
Don;t worry about it not being perfect, the outline is just a guide. Once you start gluing, the star forms itself!
Cut the extra cardboard (foam board) away from the patriotic egg carton star leaving only the wreath
We used an exacto knife to do this so we could cut away as much as the cardboard as possible. Don’t worry if it looks a hot mess on the back, no one will see it!
You could hang your Patriotic Egg Carton Flag Star on your front door in honor of the 4th of July, or you could even put a picture from your July 4th celebration in the center and display it as a sort of picture frame.
We really loved making this Egg Carton Star Flag wreath, and hope you do to. Sure beats paying $25 bucks at Walmart! If you enjoyed this Patriotic Craft Tutorial, make sure to check out the other fun things we crafted up for this July 4th Holiday season!
