The fourth of July is fast approaching, and you know what that means? Red, white and blue everything! These Patriotic Mason Jars are easy to decorate with stars and stripes, and the red, white, and blue dyed coffee filter flowers make beautiful DIY decor for your home or 4th of July party.
It’s officially June 1st and that means the 4th of July crafting must commence. I saw an Instagram post that someone had made with pretty rustic pink painted mason jars with these beautiful pale pink coffee filter flowers, and I thought the concept would make a perfect 4th of July craft. That’s how these cute little Patriotic Mason Jars were born.
Being a coffee lover, we always have plenty of filters in the house, so I did some experimenting in the kitchen. Using both food coloring and RIT, I found the perfect way to dye the filters red, white and blue to make these beautiful patriotic coffee filter flowers (ok, well I didn’t actually dye the white ones)! We think they’re the perfect addition atop these red, white and blue painted mason jars.
If you want, you can go here to read the full post on exactly how I dyed the coffee filters to make the flowers. Then you can decide for yourself which method you want to use, RIT or food coloring. Both will work just fine it’s just a difference of time soaking and depth of color.
These painted patriotic mason jars would make adorable farmhouse themed holiday decor or an easy DIY centerpiece for your 4th of July party. You could even skip the coffee filter flowers and just use the stars and stripes painted mason jars as utensil holders at your July 4th celebration bar-b-que!!
Once the coffee filters are dyed, the rest is very easy! This DIY July 4th mason jar tutorial can be used for any occasion, just switch up the color scheme and BAM, you’ve got yourself a whole other mason jar project!
Don’t you just love how when you place the blue starred jar on the left hand side of the red and white striped one, that it looks like the American Flag? Clearly it doesn’t take much to amuse me. No matter what you decide to do with them, these red, white, and blue painted mason jars will be a total hit at your star spangled celebration!

How to Make Painted Patriotic Mason Jars with Red, White, and Blue Dyed Coffee Filter Flowers
Follow the below easy steps to make the best red, white, and blue July 4th decorations.
Dye the coffee filters red and blue
Follow these detailed steps to dye the coffee filters. If you are more of a “wing it” type, than soak the coffee filters in water and about 20 drops of food coloring for 15 minutes. 1 red, 1 white, and 1 blue coffee filter will make one flower, but feel free to fluff them up and use as many as you please! Allow to dry fully.
Clean the mason jars before painting
Wash them thoroughly with soap and water to remove all dirt and dust. This helps the paint to go on smoothly and stay on for longer. You can even go one step further and wipe them down with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol, which I find is the best way to get the paint to stick.
Paint one mason jar blue
Paint the entire jar including the metal lid. I would suggest at least 2 coats, allowing it fully dry in between each coat.
Paint white stars on the blue jar
You can use a star shaped stencil or you can do this freehand if you have more artistic ability than me. If you don’t have stencils, you can make your own by printing a star the size that you’d like and tracing it onto card stock. Cut the star out and use the outline as your stencil. Â
Paint another jar with red and white stripes
You can do this freehand as I did, because I was going for the more rugged look over perfect lines. If you prefer to have perfectly straight lines, you can use masking tape to keep them in line. Just place two pieces of tape down, leaving a space between the two, and paint the strip in the middle.Â
Make the coffee filter flowers
The dyed coffee filters should be fully dry by the time you get to this step if they were left in the sun. If they are still moist, you will have to wait for them to be fully dry before making the patriotic flowers.
Place the red, white, and blue dyed coffee filters on top of each other in whatever order you choose. Line them up almost exactly, but leave just a bit off center as you see below.
Take a pen or other long pointed object and place into the center of the coffee filters. Grab the coffee filters around the pen.
Twist the coffee filters around the pen.
Remove the pen and twist tightly to secure.
Fluff the coffee filters, pull them apart a bit, and shape them how you like.
Place the flowers on top of the jars.
Screw the lid onto the jars, but leave off the flat cover so that the top remains open. Place the twisted side of the flower down into the top so that the flower looks as if it is coming out of the jar. I didn’t find the need to secure the flower to the jar, however, you could apply some glue around the bottom of the coffee filter flower if you’d like.
And there ya have it! Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Mason Jars with Stars and Stripes!
These Fourth of July painted jars are so easy to make and are sure to be a hit at your Patriotic themed party. You can use them as centerpieces, or they would make great utensil holders if you just take the flowers off and lay them next to them. Â
These American Flag painted mason jars would also make look great as farmhouse themed patriotic decor. Â
