This gorgeous, coffee-stained muslin heart banner is the perfect blend of primitive charm and timeless beauty. With deep red homespun fabric and rustic skeleton keys, this vintage-inspired piece captures the feeling that love is truly in the air! A perfect DIY for Valentines Day, or even everyday.

Remember that time I accidentally bought TEN yards of Muslin? I sure do!
But it was a happy mistake because LOTS of cute crafts have come out of it.

Like this beautiful banner!
My fave thing to do with Muslin is to coffee stain it using Dollar Tree instant coffee, which gives it that antiqued grungy look you see in the banner below.

We did a whole Zoom workshop on how to Coffee Stain fabric and muslin in my subscription group, The Crafterparty. I also have a quick video of how to do it here.
If this banner isn’t your vibe, and you are more of a fun color gal for Valentines, you will LOVE this Stuffed Heart Bouquet!

Once you have the muslin coffee stained to your liking it’s time to make the banner.
I used a template and base from another banner to trace it onto the muslin and cut/rip out the pendants, but I’m sure you could easily freehand it too. I did 4 pendants and once they were cut and ripped out, I used my fingers to fray the edges. (You can rip on the vertical/horizontal, but not on the diagonal). You definitely don’t need the burlap banner base to make this, the muslin will stand alone just fine!
Next, use a heart template to trace the hearts onto the center of the pendants. I use Frixion pen because you can write directly on the fabric, and use a heat gun to make it disappear!

Once you have the hearts traced out, you can paint them red. I didn’t do a full coverage paint, I did more of a distressed look.
Next, I tied skeleton keys onto a small shoestring twine bow, and glued them to the top of each heart.
I used a hole punch to punch two holes into the top of the pendants so that I can string the twine through.

Once I had the 4 pendants strung onto the twine, I spread them out leaving a few inches in between each pendant.
I ripped pieces of fabric into strips about 1″ wide and 8″ long. I went with a red fabric and a red and white homespun.

I tied one of each of them onto the twine, in between each pendant, using a simple knot. I also tied one of each onto each end.

I love how gorgeous this turned out! It looks so good with the corrugated cardboard heart I made to go along with it.
