Celebrate and decorate for the Americana holidays with this budget friendly rag flag made from scrap fabric, ribbon, and a pocket of an old pair of jeans! This Patriotic DIY is easy to make, and the best part is you just may already have the red, white, and, blue supplies to make this at home!
I love me a DIY that puts all sorts of scrap craft supplies to good use, so it’s no surprise this Fabric and Ribbon Rag Flag is one of my very favorite patriotic crafts to date. Even more then the Patriotic Star DIY I made last week, and I thought THAT one was my fave! This one also gave me an excuse to finally cut up those jeans that don’t fit anymore (#Quarantine15), use up my leftover Valentines ribbon, and put some extra fabric to good use.
I’ve done my best to link to the supplies I used for this rag flag, but as I said many of them were scraps from my stash and things that I already had on hand. When you make this, I encourage you to use what you have and get creative. Rummage through your stash and grab any sort of red and white ribbon and fabric that you can find. The more textures, sizes, and patterns, the better!
This Americana Rag Flag makes for the cutest Fourth of July and Memorial Day decor but honestly, I would keep this bad boy up year round because I love it just that much!

I made this beautiful Scrappy Fabric and Ribbon American Flag on video, so you can WATCH the step by step tutorial HERE or right below.
This American Rag Flag would even make a good craft for the kiddos to do for the 4th of July. It could be amended to make a smaller version too!
Time needed: 1 hour
How to Make a Scrap Fabric and Ribbon Rag Flag
- Cut several strips of white and red fabric and/or ribbon.
Each of my strips were about 24-28″ long. Don’t worry about them all being the exact same length, the messiness adds to the character and the look of this rag flag. If any of them are insanely long you can always trim them up after. Once you tie them onto the dowel, they will hang a little bit shorter. For the fabric, just cut a tiny slit, and then rip the rest of it so that you get that neat frayed look which makes puts the “Rag” into this Flag.
- Tie the strips onto the rod alternating red and white using simple knots.
This part is super simple, but a little bit time consuming. Just tie a single knot and don’t worry about the extra ribbon/fabric that is left at the top of the knot, the 1-2″ extra adds to the look of the top.
- Cut the pocket out of a pair of old blue jeans.
If you don’t have a pair of jeans you’re willing to demolish, any ‘ole blue fabric or bandana will do.
- Add fringe to the outer edge of the jeans pocket.
This step is totally optional, but I think it’s super cute! Just cut teeny slits all around the edge, or if you have the type of jeans material that you can pull a string and then fray it with your fingers, even better. Mine were stretchy jeans, so that didn’t seem like they would do the fray thing on their own.
- Paint the wooden star white, and glue it to the front of the jeans pocket.
You could also use several smaller white stars, or even star shaped buttons. Use what you have and get creative.
- Add a couple of wooden beads to each end with a piece of twine to hang.
Add a drop of hot glue to keep the beads in place, and a drop of glue around the knot where the twine is to secure it in place.
