Speed on over and celebrate! If you’re looking for a Super Sonic fun themed birthday party for the little’s, this Sonic the Hedgehog party is sure to be a huge hit with all the kids! You’ll have just as much fun creating this party as you will attending it!
My Twinsies just turned the big 9, and I couldn’t be happier with the Super Sonic the Hedgehog 9th birthday party we had this year! Granted things were a bit smaller this year due to the whole Coronacraziness, but we still celebrated in style.
I am going to risk aging myself when I say that I grew up playing the Sega Genesis game, Sonic the Hedgehog. I never imagined my boys becoming fans until the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie came out and they just loved it! (By the way, the movie was super cute and it’s definitely worth a watch.) So, I wasn’t all that surprised when I asked them what theme they wanted for their 9th Birthday party, and they both immediately said “SONIC THE HEDGEHOG!”.

Planning a Sonic the Hedgehog Party
If you are planning to DIY your party, I think it’s best to start the planning early so that you don’t feel stressed out about the process. Planning is half the fun! I created this checklist to help, just click the below button to download it now.
Stressed about planning your party?
Eliminate the stress and don’t forget a single thing with our Party Planning Checklist!
One of the very first things to do when planning is to get those invitations out! I created our own digital invitations using google images and a free app called Canva, but you can get some really nice and affordable personalized invitations that look just like this one on Etsy.
Sonic the Hedgehog Birthday Party Decorations
There are plenty of Sonic decorations for sale out there, but if you’re anything like me, you will DIY as much as you can! Not only does DIY’ing it save a ton of money, but it makes for a more memorable party if you ask me.
Sonic is known for his golden rings, and no Sonic the Hedgehog party would be complete without them. You can go here to see the details of how I made these DIY Sonic Golden Rings.
We used them as props for the food table backdrop, and we also used them to make this DIY Sonic Centerpiece for the guest table. I stuffed some yellow crinkle cut paper into a glass vase, poked a wooden skewer into the DIY Golden Rings, and added a cardboard cut out sonic.
I also made a Sonic the Hedgehog birthday banner with the Twins nickname #JustMadd to hang behind the seating table. If you are not up for making one, or short on time, Etsy has some great choices for digital banners you can download and print on the spot.
I wanted to point out that the boys were turning the big 9, so I made this #9 decoration for the treats table out of a Dollar Tree paper fan wheel and some blue crinkle cut paper.
We made this backdrop for the food table in the Sonic theme colors, red, white, and blue, out of Dollar Tree plastic tablecloths. I got this idea from Catherine at smartpartyplanning.com, its kind of her signature piece and it’s SO easy to make! Backdrops can be pricey and complicated to make, so I was so happy when I discovered her plastic tablecloth creation.
Sonic the Hedgehog Birthday Party Props
The Sonic ramp prop was by far the most extravagant part of this DIY Sonic party, and I don’t expect most Mom’s would go this far. I am known for going a little overboard on the DIY party planning decorations so don’t feel bad if you don’t want to try to pull this off without a legit party planner. And if you do? Kudos to you, you’re officially the coolest Mom on the block!
To make this Sonic Ramp Backdrop, all you need is some cardboard, brown paint, green felt, and some masking tape and glue. To make this prop, I simply cut out cardboard in the shape of the ramp, taped it together, painted the brown grid lines, and glued green felt grass to the top.
Aside from the smaller DIY golden rings, I made one large one for the center of the backdrop out of a pool noodle that I spray painted yellow and glued into a circle with a cardboard Sonic. Of course, if you could find a yellow pool noodle that would be much simpler, but I could only find green at my local DT.
To complete the set up, I added some DIY Palm Trees to look just like the real game. You can go here to read the details on exactly how I made the Palm Trees out of empty paper rolls.
I wanted to add some more golden rings to the mix, so I bought some cheapo fake golden wedding rings and spread them all over the food and guest sitting tables.
Sonic the Hedgehog Party Favors
These personalized Sonic the Hedgehog water bottle labels added the perfect touch to the party decorations. Our party was a pool party, so it’s important that guests stay hydrated! They can even take a bottle for the ride home.
Perhaps my single most favorite touch to this Super Sonic 9th Birthday, is these personalized mini hand sanitizer labels! I’m not gonna lie, hand sanitizer has never crossed my mind to offer as a party favor until 2020, but everyone just loved having their own pocket sanitizer to use throughout the party. You can order these and have them personalized and sent right to your house. They are the perfect size label for the Bath and Body Works mini hand sanitizers. We used Vanilla Cupcake and Pina Colada.
I made these Sonic the Hedgehog party favor bags by gluing Sonic images onto regular blue favor bags. If you’d rather purchase Sonic favor bags you can get them here.
Sonic the Hedgehog Party Games and Activities
We needed to fill those Sonic favor bags with something right?! No Sonic party is complete with some sort of game or activity, so this year we had a Sonic the Hedgehog Pinata!
I was brave and DIY’d the Pinata this year, you can go here to read the full tutorial if you’re up for making your own. If your thinking “no way”, don’t worry you can buy a really nice and affordable Pinata that looks just like this one on Etsy too!
We also had one other mini game where I filled a mason jar with Sonic colored gumballs, and had each guest guess the number of gumballs. Closest without going over wins! Any game that involves a bunch of yummy candy from Candy Store is a win for the kiddos!
Last but not least, we had a local bakery, Kim’s Kakes here in San Diego, make the Sonic the Hedgehog cake. If you are planning on ordering your cake I suggest searching Facebook for local bakeries and read the reviews. That is how I found Kim’s Kakes and I couldn’t have been happier.
I hope you got some good ideas for planning your Sonic the Hedgehog birthday party! Don’y forget to download my super helpful party planning checklist so you can eliminate the stress that comes along with planning a party.
Happy Super Sonic Birthday!
Until Next Time…
