You’ll be Rockin’ around the Wooden Shim Christmas Tree this year after making this gorgeous black, red, and white themed DIY Christmas decor. This A-frame tree uses miniature Rae Dunn inspired ornaments for a sleek and classic look that’s a must add to your ‘Christmas crafts to make’ list this year!
2021 was the Christmas of the Red, Black, and White. This year, out of nowhere, I became obsessed with this color scheme for all of my Christmas crafts and decor! This Wooden Shim Christmas Tree is no exception.
Along with this Snowman Wood Bead Garland, the Wood Block Presents, and Mini Foam Cone Trees. The list goes on! There was red, black, and white everywhere this past Christmas.
I used to be a traditional red and green type of gal, so I’m not sure what the heck happened but I’m here for it. And I hope you are too!

How to Make a Wooden Shim Christmas Tree
I made this gorgeous Wooden Shim Christmas Tree on video, so you can WATCH the step by step tutorial HERE or click on the picture right below.
I’m not gonna lie, it’s a tad hard to explain this one in writing, so I encourage you to watch the Live replay and get all your “how to” questions answered. This is actually super simple to make, and you can whip one up in under an hour!
I decided to go with a Red, Black, and White theme, but you can do yours in whatever theme and color scheme that you like.
You could do a white Christmas tree with buffalo check bulbs for a farmhouse vibe, or a green tree with red, silver, gold, and green ornaments for a more traditional vibe. The sky is the limit!
Start by making your tree frame, I used 2 shims (alternating thick/thin end) for the bottom base and each side has 3 shims, just slightly overlapping each other like you see here. All kept together by good ‘ole hot glue!
I then painted my entire frame black. You could totally paint the shims first, but I thought it was easier this way.
I used hot glue to attached the bakers twine to the inside of the Wooden shims, but you could also screw in mini eye hooks and drape the twine across zig zag that way. The hot glue worked for me because you really couldn’t see it at all with the black.
I just started at the top, and worked my way down. Glued the end of the twine to one side of the frame at the top, then strung on the ornaments, and then glued the twine to the other side of the frame. So on and so forth until I got to the bottom. I put a dab of hot glue on the top of each ornament where it hit the string just to keep them in place.
That’s it, that’s all! You got yourself an adorable A Frame Wooden Shim Christmas Tree, with Rae Dunn Inspired ornaments!
