Turn an ordinary Dollar Tree wooden word from the Shore Living collection into a gorgeous DIY BEACH Decor with a little ocean inspired Ombre, some wooden shims, and a beautiful crafty rice paper printable called ‘Message in a Bottle’!
I am on an absolute Ombre rolllllll lately! First it was the Ombre Mermaid Tail, then the Ombre Seashell Seahorse, and now the Ombre Beach decor! I’m addicted!
I had different plans for the background of this orignally. I was going to do do a white “Chippy” background, but then my friend Cathy released her new prints for the month and it changed everything!
Every since I discovered printables from Cathy at Digital Deco Designs I have been literally obsessed. I’m telling ya, go check them out for yourself and I dare you to not get addicted!
The “Message in a Bottle” Printable that I am using in this project is from my digital subscription to download and print at home, but if you don’t have a printer she does print and ship too! The super uh-maz-ing thing about her prints is that they are done on RICE PAPER! Say Whhaaaaaaaat!?
If you have not Mod Podged something with rice paper, you are not living your best Crafty Life my friend. Jus’ Sayin’. It’s like a combo between scrapbook paper and a napkin. Its got the translucentness of a napkin (is that a word? I don’t think so because it has the little red squiggly line under it LOL), but the durability of scrapbook paper, so its very easy to work with and doesn’t tear.
You’ve got to try it for yourself!

How to Make a Dollar Tree Beach Decor
I made this gorgeous Beach Decor on video, so you can WATCH me make it HERE or click on the picture right below.
This project is made with one of my very favorite craft supplies….wooden shims! Start by tracing the shims onto the back of the ‘Message in Bottle’ rice paper, cutting the strips out, and then Mod Podging them to the wooden shims. I used 2 sheets of the rice paper so some of the strips are duplicates. ( I only ended up using about 1 1/2 sheets)
I than sanded around all of the edges of the shims to give each piece a nice finished look, and so that I could capture the jagged ends of the shims, making it look like true beach driftwood like you see below!
Next, I lined them all up alternating thick end/thin end, and then flipped them all over to secure them together with “braces”. I glued some extra plain shims along with some giant popsicle sticks across the back until I felt like the piece was nice and sturdy.
Now for the “hardest” part, the Ombre! Start off by painting the entire word BEACH with “Ocean colored” Ombre! I used dark blues, ight blues, teals, tan, and white, and blended in-between each color by mixing them together and blending with water. You can see how I did this by watching the Live replay.
Look at that seamless color transition! JK! Once I was done, I glued the word to the wooden shim background, offsetting it just a tad to the right to leave room for the burlap strip with the starfish.
Glue a strip of burlap across the left hand side, and a small starfish on top to finish it off.
I am so in love with this Dollar Tree Ombre Beach Decor! This one was auctioned off at the Manda Panda Simmer Auction, but I almost wished I kept this bad boy! Oh well, I can always make another!
