Turn a Pine Cone from your own backyard into a creepy crawly Spider with this Halloween Pine Cone Spider craft. The kids will love making these Halloween decorations with natures best craft supply. They are fun and easy to make and you only need a few basic supplies. It’s spOOktakular!
This Pine Cone Spider is the 5th (but not final!) Halloween character in this Pine Cone spOOktakular series. By the end of this we’re going to have an entire spOOky Halloween Army! In case you missed it, make sure to check out our Pine Cone Mummy, Ghost, Pumpkin, and Bat. And be sure to come back for the last…..because what would Halloween be without a Witch!
My Twins and I had so much fun making these Pine Cone Spiders (and ghosts and mummy’s etc!). From collecting the cones at nearby parks, to cleaning and preparing them to become spOOktakular, to transforming them into creepy crawlys, the whole process was a blast. If you’re collecting your Pine Cones straight from nature as we did, make sure you don’t skip the “cleaning and preparing” step that we did.
In case you are not an avid pine cone crafter and didn’t know that cleaning them is an essential step (don’t worry, I had to learn the hard way), I have an entire post on the exact steps I take to bake the bugs out, and as an added bonus leave you with beautifully bloomed cones. That is, unless you like spiders in your crafts? It is after all a Halloween craft…!
If you aren’t lucky enough to live in an area where you can collect pine cones right in your own backyard, don’t worry you can buy them on Etsy, or even good ‘ol Amazon.

How to turn a Pine Cone into a Spider
Follow the below easy steps to make a pine cone spider.
Clean and prepare your pine cone
If you bought your pine cones, you can skip this step. If not, I already stressed the importance of baking those bugs out! You can find the steps to thoroughly clean and prepare your pine cones here.
Paint the pine cone black
We used acrylic paint and hand painted this little guy, but only because that is what we happened to have on hand. You could also spray paint it, which is much quicker, but it does require you to be in a well ventilated (and well protected) area. Hand painting is much better, and way more fun for the kiddos. We spray painted our Pine Cone Ghost, and it came out just as good. So either way works!
Cut 4 pipe cleaners in half so that you have 8 equal pieces
There are a few different types of pipe cleaners and it really doesn’t matter which kind you use, but if you have the option I’d go with the prickly type over the soft and fuzzy type. We chose the hard prickly kind because we thought it more closely resembled a spiders hairy legs.
Bend each pipe cleaner into the shape of “spiders legs”
Glue 4 pipe cleaner “legs” onto each side of the black painted pine cone body
The best way to do this is to squirt hot glue inside the crevices of the pine cone and then stuck the ends of the pipe cleaners in the grooves and allow to dry. This will still work with other glue, but you will have to hold it in place for a few minutes until the glue sets.
Cut 2 white “fangs” out of felt
Simply snip 2 small curved triangular shapes out of white felt to make fangs. If you son’t have white felt you can substitute white card stock, or even a piece of a white pipe cleaner.
Your Pine Cone Spider is ready to create *all the scares* this Halloween! Set him out with his Pine Cone Family, and they’re sure to be a total hit this Halloween! The twins say this spider is so creepy that he’s cute!
