Pine Cone Crafts make the best Holiday decorations, and this Pine Cone Frankenstein is no exception! The kids will love making this spOOky DIY Halloween craft, and all you need is a few supplies, one of which you may have in your own backyard!
We went Pine Cone Crazy to kick off this Halloween season, so Franken-Pine is not alone. He has a whole Pine Cone Crew to go Trick or Treating this year, so make sure to check out the rest of this Pine Cone SpOOktakular. We crafted not 2, not 3, but 5 Pine Cone Characters and the Mummy is my favorite by far!
Kids just love crafting with Pine Cones, and it’s a great way to incorporate some nature into your crafts. Go on a hike, or to the park, and scoop up all the Pine Cones you can get because the possibilities are endless. But beware….Pine Cones do not leave nature alone. They come with creepy crawlys, dirt, and god knows what else, so make sure to clean and prepare them first before crafting!
If you’re not sure how to clean them, make sure to check my post out with the steps that I use to bake the bugs out, and leave you with nice full cones too. If you’re not as lucky as me to live in an area where pine cones are plentiful, don’t worry, you can buy them on Etsy, or even good ‘ol Amazon.

How to Make a Pine Cone Frankenstein Halloween Craft
Follow the below easy steps to turn a pine cone into a Franken-Pine!
Clean and prepare your pine cone
If you bought your pine cones, you can skip this step. If not, I already stressed the importance of baking those bugs out! You can find the steps to thoroughly clean and prepare your pine cones here.
Paint the pine cone green
We used acrylic paint and hand painted this guy, but only because that is what we happened to have on hand. You could also spray paint it, which is much quicker, but it does require you to be in a well ventilated (and well protected) area. Hand painting is much better, and way more fun for the kiddos. We spray painted our Pine Cone Ghost, and it came out just as good. So either way works, the choice is yours.
Cut the Frankenstein hair out of black felt
Cut a strip of felt and zig-zag the bottom, leaving the top straight across. You can make your hair as tall or short as you like. We made ours super tall!
Bend the black pipe cleaner into the bolts that come out of his forehead and his “scar”
We used one pipe cleaner, and bent each of the ends and twisted until they looked like the above pic, and then cut it in half. For the scar, we cut a small piece of the pipe cleaner, and then 3 tiny pieces and glued them across.
Make the Franken-Pines mouth out of felt
Cut a small thin strip of white or black felt, and then 3 even smaller strips to glue across.
Glue the Franken-Pines hair to the top of the pine cone once it has dried.
Use the sharp end of the pipe cleaners to poke a hole through the felt hair.
Put one bolt on each side of his head, so that it looks like they are coming out of it. You could glue these as well, but poking them through seemed easier.
Glue on the googly eyes, scar, and mouth
Now you have a Pine Cone Frankenstein to celebrate Halloween with this year! You could make some other Pine Cone Characters, like the Witch, Bat, and Ghost that we made, to go along with him and it will be a Pine Cone SpOOktakular!
These would look great sitting on a windowsill, or on the front porch to scare all the Trick-or-Treaters that dare to come by. This Franken-Pine was a blast for the Kiddos to make and I hope you have as much fun making them as we did!
