I am quickly becoming a huge of fan of St. Patty’s Day. Mostly because I adore all things RAINBOW, but also because…how cute are Leprechaun Crafts?? We just love how fun and easy this Pine Cone Leprechaun is to make, and I’m sure you will too.
In a very (very, very, very) rainy March in San Diego, me and the Twinsies have had plenty of time to craft. I am expecting much more of this *craft time* as the world takes precautions against the thing that shall not be named.
I have made it abundantly clear that I have no shortage of Pine Cones to make *all the things* with. And that, my friend, is how this Pine Cone Leprechaun was born! We had already made an Egg Carton Rainbow Wreath and a Toilet Paper Tube Leprechaun to get in the spirit, so this lil’ guy just might top off the St. Patrick’s Day decor in this household (although I aaaaaaammm thinking of making a St. Patty’s Day Gnome).
The supplies you’ll need to make this Pine Cone Leprechaun are pretty basic, and most of them you may already have on hand. In case you don’t, I have linked to the supplies we used from Amazon to save you time looking!
If live in an area where you can get your own pine cones from the great outdoors, don’t be like me and forget to clean and prepare them for crafting before using them! If you don’t, you just may find a living surprise in your Pine Cone Leprechaun!

I just love making things with pine cones, obsessed really. BUT, if you are doing as I do and using ones that you’ve collected straight from Mother Nature herself, it is imperative that you clean those bad boys up before using them in your project! If you don’t clean them properly, don’t come crying to me when your evicting a family or Daddy Long Legs in a week. If you are wondering, “how in the heck do I clean them, because I hate spiders”, don’t worry I’ve written out the steps not only to clean them, but to get beautifully bloomed cones at that!!
Alright, let’s get these lil’ leprechauns going.
How to make a Pine Cone Leprechaun
As I already mentioned, first things first is to get those pine cones cleaned and prepared. If you bought yours at the store, you get to skip this step.
Next, paint the entire pine cone green. Cut the toilet paper tube in half, and paint that green as well. You’ll want to make sure to do these steps first so that they have time to dry while you’re doing the next step.
Cut a strip of black glitter paper about an inch wide, and long enough to wrap around the tube. Cut a rectangle out of the gold paper to make the buckle. To get the hole in the center, just fold the gold rectangle in half, cut out a small square from the middle, and unfold.
Next, cut out a circle from the black glitter paper. Make sure your circle is just a bit wider than the opening of the tube to serve as the brim of the hat.
Now take the green toilet paper tube half and glue the black glitter circle to the bottom of the tube. Then wrap the black glitter paper strip around the tube and secure with glue, and glue the gold buckle in front. You’ve just made the hat!
Secure the hat to the top of the painted pine cone with glue.
Next, glue on the googly eyes and the orange pom poms for the beard. I cut my pom poms in half so that it they laid flat against the pine cone because mine were pretty big, but I think you could leave them whole and it would still turn out cute!
I hope this cute little St. Patrick’s Day kids craft can put a smile on you and your little’s faces amidst all that is going on in the world. I know it did for us!
Make sure to Pin this Pine Cone Leprechaun for later! If you run out of ideas (or supplies), you can check out our Egg Carton Rainbow Wreath or our recycled crafts! And don’t forget to leave me a comment to let me know if the kiddos enjoyed making these!
Until next time…
